Description
Included are the megacities of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen as well as the World ‘s most densely populated city of Hong Kong. A vast floating population from rural areas migrates to and from these cities. Rural villages are visited to show why people leave for work and lifestyles in cities and why others are anxious about the future of villages. The government is planning a major shift in population from the villages to existing and new cities which will create a larger consumer market and increased tax collection, stimulating the economy. Shown are new, but empty, ghost cities, an unusual characteristic of urban development. It is expected that these will eventually have residents arriving from rural areas. Planning future urban areas and growth needs to consider the needs and aspirations of the people and avoid the problems shown in cities that are already too large. The Government and planners are aware of what needs to be done to ensure improving living standards and reduce urban problems. Some approaches are shown in this new look at urbanisation and change in China.
