Description
While this millennium may no longer be new, the style of 2007 embraced new technology and luxury. Designers developed a space age aesthetic with high-tech fabrics and voluminous silhouettes; then came back down to earth with an old-fashioned yet chic sensibility. At the Met, Paul Poiret was King, and Anna Wintour continued to reign supreme as the most influential woman in fashion. Olivier Theyskens debuted his first designs for the house of Nina Ricci while Karl Lagerfeld contemplated the ever changing nature of the industry, and the debate continued over what constitutes a healthy weight for a model. Internationally renowned designers celebrated big anniversaries: Christian Dior toasted 60 years, Jean Paul Gaultier turned 30, Ferragamo celebrated an impressive 80 years of success which started simply with a shoe, and Chado Ralph Rucci marked 25 years of design. 2007 was also a year that industry insiders sought to facilitate social change through fashion. Model Shalom Harlow shared her favorite ecofriendly shopping destinations in New York’s Lower East Side, and Giorgio Armani’s One Night Only event in London drew celebrities and performers from around the globe to help support the Product Red campaign to raise awareness of the AIDS crisis in Africa. 2007 was a milestone, not just in several designers’ careers, but in the industry’s acceptance of environmental and social causes.
